What Is a Metal Detector? Applications, Benefits and the Best Metal Detection Sizes

A Metal Detector is an industrial inspection device designed to detect unwanted metallic contaminants inside or on products. In manufacturing, metal detectors are widely used as an important quality-control and product-safety solution, especially in food processing, pharmaceutical, packaging, chemical and consumer-goods industries.

Unlike security metal detectors, industrial food metal detectors are specifically designed to detect small metallic particles while compensating for the electrical characteristics of the product being inspected.

How Does an Industrial Metal Detector Work?

Most food-industry metal detectors use a balanced-coil electromagnetic detection system. A high-frequency electromagnetic field is generated inside the detector aperture. When a metal particle passes through this field, it disturbs the electromagnetic balance, producing a signal that the detector recognizes as metal contamination.

The detector can typically identify three major categories:

Ferrous metals are generally the easiest to detect because they are magnetic and conductive. Non-ferrous metals are non-magnetic but highly conductive. Non-magnetic stainless steel, particularly SUS304/SUS316, is usually the most challenging contaminant because of its lower magnetic permeability and conductivity.

Main Applications of Metal Detectors

Industrial metal detectors are commonly installed at critical points of production lines to prevent contaminated products from reaching customers.

Typical applications include:

  • Food and beverage processing
  • Meat, seafood and frozen food
  • Bakery, confectionery and snacks
  • Rice, flour, grain and powder products
  • Pharmaceutical production
  • Chemical and packaging industries
  • Finished-product inspection before shipment

The system can be integrated with an automatic reject mechanism, allowing contaminated products to be removed from the production line without stopping production.

What Is the Best Metal Detection Size?

There is no single “best” metal size for every application. Detection sensitivity depends on the detector aperture, product type, moisture, salt content, temperature, packaging, metal type and particle orientation.

As a practical reference:

Moist/fresh products 1.2–2.0 mm 1.5–2.5 mm 3.0–4.5 mm
Larger aperture 1.5–2.5+ mm 2.5–4.0+ mm 3.5–5.0+ mm

These figures are reference ranges, not guaranteed specifications. Smaller detector apertures generally allow higher sensitivity, while wet or salty products can create a stronger “product effect” and make detection more difficult.

How to Choose the Right Metal Detector

For the best performance, the detector should be selected based on product dimensions, conveyor speed, product characteristics, aperture size and required detection sensitivity. The final sensitivity should always be validated using certified test pieces under actual production conditions.
